Dr. Sakura was born in Seattle, Washington. He is of Japanese heritage, but is a third generation American. He attended high school and college in the mid-west. Both his undergraduate and medical degrees were obtained from Northwestern University in Chicago. His plastic surgery training was at the University of Rochester Medical School in Rochester, New York. After completing residency, Dr. Sakura served in the Air Force and was stationed in Seoul, Korea. He was a Deputy Medical Director of the African Inland Mission in Kenya, East Africa for five years. He was also a lecturer and consultant in plastic surgery at the University of Nairobi Medical School. Dr. Sakura moved to New Mexico where he was an Assistant Professor for two years. He entered private practice in 1979 and has been in practice in the current location for 25 years.
